Live Green 17th August

Live Green is on again, on the 17th August at Victoria Park, Sydney and of course BikeSydney will be there.

Live Green - Ideas to green your life

“More than 10,000 people attended the first Live Green event in 2007 and this year’s program promises to offer more innovative and simple practical actions you can take to reduce your environmental impact and help make our Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision a reality.” Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP

So a run down of what is happening on the day visit http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/livegreen/. Also the City of Sydney are giving away a new bike, so for a chance of winning that visit http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/livegreen/Utilities/Newsletter.aspx.

BikeSydney is a volunteer orgainsation, so if you can lend a hand for an hour or two on the day at the BikeSydney stall that would be great. Basically we will be handing out some maps and information for cycling and also answering questions that people may have. So if you can help email cityride@bikesydney.org.

Calling all photographers

Mystery Tour: An invitation of submit images to an exhibition of cycle touring photography

Anyone who has toured by bicycle knows that it’s often the unexpected encounters and unplanned detours that become the highlights of a cycle tour. At a suitable distance, even the challenge of overcoming a mechanical breakdown in the middle of nowhere, can become a tale of ingenuity and heroic triumph.

For this exhibition, we are asking you to dig a little deeper into your collections of cycle touring images (no sunsets or posing with road signs) to reveal some of those unexpected moments.

We are looking for images that document chance meetings with friendly (or unfriendly) locals; bush-mechanic-style innovation in the face of mechanical tragedies and magical places discovered by getting totally lost. Images selected for the exhibition will be printed as oversized postcards with the photographer’s statement on the back.

SUBMIT: UP TO 10 LOW RES JPEG IMAGES [1mb each] FOR PREVIEW. Each photograph should be accompanied by a short statement (max. 20 words) about the image.?
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, September 12 2008
EMAIL TO: fcurve@gmail.com
Selected photographers will be asked to submit high resolution files at a later date. Prints not required.

Mystery Tour will be part of ‘road’ -  a series of art shows tying in with the International Bicycle Film Festival, bought to you by BIKESydney and Cheeky Transport.

Now You See It; Now You Don’t - Park St

Remember this
Park St Bike Lanes

These werre the bike lanes on Park St in the Sydney CBD, the only bike lanes in the city. They connect to the now disgointed William St bike lanes. But as of now they are no longer, as part of the papal visit this area becomes a bus lane.

Looking towards Town Hall - Bike lanes gone

and

Continuing down Park St towards William Ss

Now in a community consulataion meeting it has been stated that the bike lanes would be restored - what BikeSydney want to know is when? So in that we have sent a letter to Minister Watkins, who is responsible for this red stripe asking that question. Read our letter here.

Also the City of Sydney did have an idea for Park St, but obviously the government chose to ignore this.

BikeSydney Submission - Redfern Waterloo Authority

The Redfern Waterloo Authority has released its draft Concept Plan for the North Eveleigh Rail Yards, a large site that lies between the rail line at Redfern, and Wilson Street - often called Sydney’s “bicycle highway”.   Being close to rail, bus and cycle routes, the site provides a very strong basis for sustainable transportation, and the Plan envisages approximately 1200 new dwellings (2400 residents) and 3270 jobs on the site, as well retail and cultural uses.  Unfortunately, it also proposes almost 2000 car parking spaces - a figure that BikeSydney believes is excessive in such a location, and likely to have a huge impact on surrounding residential areas, as well as the movement of cyclists and pedestrians.

BikeSydney submitted our concerns to the RWA, and we will continue to monitor the progress of the Concept Plan.
Our full submission can be accessed here.

Biennale 08 + bikes

Shaun Gladwell\'s installation on Cockatoo Island

With the theme “Revolution - Forms that Turn”, it’s no great suprise that bicycles feature in the works for Sydney’s Biennale.

Shaun Gladwell’s Ghost Rider (2008) is a sculptural amalgam of mountain bicycles, sound and video.

Shaun’s work is one of many on Cockatoo Island. There’s a myriad of atistic works to have a look at on the island and free ferries from the MCA.

Dreams on Wheels Exhibition

LOcation: University of Technology, Sydney
12th June - 22nd June

The Dreams on Wheels exhibition showcases the Danish culture of cycling and innovative Danish bicycle design. This exhibition marks the re-opening of the Royal Danish Embassy in Canberra and is a partnership between the Embassy and the City of Sydney.

In total the exhibition features 18 bicycles plus 10 City Bikes, bicycles that are identical to those used in the Danish free bicycle program currently being adopted in Paris and considered for introduction in Australia. The exhibition also has a film program with several documentaries including Jørgen Leth’s work about the Tour de France and Cities for People which discusses the ideas of Danish architect Jan Gehl.

The exhibition’s curator is Thomas Ermacora, a city planner and founder of Etikstudio in Paris. Motivated by how a ‘cyclocentric’ approach to urban development can stimulate sustainable civic behaviour, the exhibition promotes cycling in a broader cultural context, displaying Danish urban cityscapes alongside urban visions for Australia by Jan Gehl.

Weekday opening hours 9am-6pm
Weekend opening hours 10am-4pm

Admission is free.
